چکیده

S u m m a r y : In this study we compared the sensitivity of molecular, serologic and parasitologic methods for diagnosis of equine trichinellosis in two abattoirs, one rural and one federal inspection type. Diaphragm muscle samples were obtained from 170 slaughter horses and examined by artificial digestion and PCR. Serum samples from these horses were also analyzed by ELISA. No Trichinella muscle larvae were detected by artificial digestion. However, specific antibodies against Trichinella were detected in 17 % and 7 % of the serum samples examined from the rural and the federal abattoirs respectively. By PCR, 15 % and 2 % of the samples from these two abattoirs were Trichinella positive.

Larval viability and serological response in horses with long-term Trichinella spiralis infection.

The horse is considered an aberrant host for the nematode parasite Trichinella spiralis, and many aspects of the biology and epidemiology of Trichinella infection in the horse are poorly understood. It has been reported that experimentally-infected horses produce a transient serological response to infection and that muscle larvae are cleared more rapidly than in parasite-adapted hosts such as ...

Horse trichinellosis, an unresolved puzzle.

In spite of routine controls to detect Trichinella larvae in horse-meat, human infections due to horse-meat consumption continue to occur in France and Italy. The epidemiology of horse trichinellosis since its discovery in 1975 is outlined, addressing the possible modes of natural transmission to horses, the need to develop more sensitive methods for detecting Trichinella larvae in horses, and ...

A demographic survey of unwanted horses in Ireland in 2011 and totals for 2012 and a comparison with 2010

This report compiles the available information on unwanted horses in Ireland for 2011 and 2012 and builds upon the previous report for the period 2005 to 2010. Similar trends are present in the high value responsible ownership category and the practicing veterinary profession although extensively involved in horse welfare, euthanises a small proportion of Ireland's unwanted horses. Welfare grou...

The lateral flow card test: an alternative method for the detection of Trichinella infection in swine.

A novel lateral flow card (TS-Card pork) test was developed for the serological detection of Trichinella infected pigs. Based on extensive studies performed in Romania during 1999-2000 this test proved to be highly specific sensitive, rapid (3-12 minutes) and easy to use (no need for laboratory facilities). It can be used both for the detection of Trichinella infection in carcasses and for epiz...

Detection of Trichinella infection in food animals.

The first part of this review article deals with classical methods used for the detection of Trichinella larvae in muscle samples of those animal species which are recognized as traditional sources of trichinellosis for human beings, as well as those species which are important for epidemiological reasons. Special consideration is given to the main applications of these methods (routine slaught...
